The Rmnt.ru portal devoted a detailed article to the description of the construction technology of the insulated Swedish slab. We are sure that our instructions in the overwhelming majority of cases allow you to avoid fatal mistakes and get a reliable, high-quality foundation at home. However, realizing how important the right foundation is for the successful completion of the construction of a house, we decided to develop the topic, talk about the pros and cons of UWB, and also highlight errors that can become irreparable.

Let's start with the advantages of insulated Swedish board:

  • Energy efficiency. Perhaps the biggest plus, the water floor will provide a comfortable stay, and concrete will be an excellent heat accumulator. Heating savings will be noticeable;
  • UWB can be erected on a variety of soil types, including difficult for construction;
  • The result is a ready-made rough base for various types of flooring - from linoleum to parquet;
  • Quick installation. Despite the fact that the construction of a USP is technically a complex process, a team of four people with special equipment will cope with a 100 square meter foundation in about two weeks.

The disadvantages of USWP are also enough:

  • Suitable only for low-rise buildings, maximum two floors. Most often, frame houses, buildings made of aerated concrete and timber are built on a heated Swedish plate, that is, they are quite light;
  • The base will be low, about 30 centimeters. However, this cannot be called a significant disadvantage. It's just that in our country they are used to houses with a basement of at least a meter in height, so this moment can be called one of the features of a house on USHP;
  • All communications are poured into concrete. What if something leaks or breaks? Destroy the foundation? This problem can be solved by arranging technical revisions and pits, but this will raise the cost of founding a house. In addition, preventive measures can be taken, such as checking the slopes and tightness of the sewer system, as well as pressure testing the underfloor heating pipes immediately before pouring concrete;
  • Building a basement under the USB is a problem. In most cases such houses do without a cellar. Or the owners are building it separately, not under the house. There are examples of building a basement under a heat-insulated slab, but this reduces the overall reliability of the structure and leads to disproportionate financial costs;
  • On an area with a slope, the use of USB is also unjustified. We will have to carefully level the entire site, build retaining walls, and engage in terracing. And this is all a waste of time and money;
  • Perhaps the main disadvantage of USB is that it is difficult to find professionals capable of competently implementing the project. Such services, firstly, are expensive, and secondly, the search for a team of specialists can be delayed. Inexperienced builders can make truly fatal mistakes, which we will discuss below.

Now let's list what mistakes are most often made when preparing the base for the UWB and pouring the slab itself:

  1. Refusal from geological surveys. We have already written how this can help and why this stage of preparation for the construction of a private house is so important;
  2. Lack of design calculations, foundation design, and this is a necessary process of preparation for construction;
  3. The foundation pit was dug when the soil had not yet thawed, it was frozen. For example, the owners were in a hurry to finish construction over the summer and began to erect the foundation in March, when night frosts are not uncommon;
  4. The fertile layer of the earth was not completely removed, everything was done "by eye", the pit was not deep enough;
  5. The base under the slab was not reliable enough. A huge mistake! It is imperative to use crushed stone, geotextiles over the entire surface of the base, the sand cushion should be tamped with a vibrating plate, then spilled with water, refilled if necessary and tamped again. Remember that not only the USHP itself, but the whole house will stand on this basis. So no dusty sand, organic matter, soil and vegetation layer - everything is very high quality, according to technology;
  6. Improper drainage. For example, it turned out to be higher than the base of the pit, but it should be lower! Or too fine crushed stone was used. As a result, the drainage will not work, the stove may end up under water after heavy rains;
  7. Refusal of preventive measures - pressure testing of pipes, pressure testing. And this is fraught with serious problems with the work of utilities and underfloor heating, which, after the completion of the work, turn out to be embedded in concrete;
  8. The surface of the USP was not sanded with a special trowel, the so-called "helicopter". That is, it was simply not prepared for laying the floor covering, the construction technology was violated.

What can all the errors we have listed lead to? Besides, in a month the USP will seriously sag. In some cases, the height difference reached 15–17 centimeters, and cracks appeared at the base. Is it possible to build a house on this basis? No! What to do? You can try adding concrete to level the slab, but if there are problems with the base, compaction of rubble and sand, drainage, then this measure will not help! The only way out is to dismantle the slab and build it all over again, already on the correct foundation. And this is a lot of wasted time and substantial sums of money thrown into the wind. So look for professionals who are familiar with the technology of UWB filling and control the process, focusing on our advice.
