Wooden bricks were invented about 20 years ago in the United States, but then the technology did not allow to create a really useful material, and the invention was simply patented without receiving further development and distribution. In Russia, a patent for wood bricks was issued only in 2012, so this is actually a novelty in the field of housing construction.

Such bricks are made 100% from wood, most often from well-dried edged boards, whose moisture content does not exceed 12%. Some manufacturers have mastered the technology of producing bricks from wood waste, which made it possible to reduce the cost of this material.

Timber brick sizes may vary. The standard length is from 315 to 950 mm, the average width is 190 mm, and the height can vary from 68 to 150 mm. In fact, this material can be called, rather, a wooden block, a bar. However, due to its external similarity, it is customary to call it a brick.

The main feature of the blocks is the presence of locks, grooves, from four sides - from below, above and on the sides. Wooden bricks are laid groove in groove, and the comb-shaped locks make the walls almost airtight, do not let cold and wind penetrate inside the house. The profile depth can be 45–70 mm.

Mortar, sealant, glue for the construction of partitions and walls made of wooden bricks are not needed! The grooves firmly connect the structure, and the laying process itself is quite simple and quick.

During the production process, each bar is perfectly sanded from all sides, a finished material is obtained that does not need additional finishing. The surface quality of wooden bricks can be compared with the factory furniture options. However, some experts still advise treating the surface of wood bricks with wax or colorless varnish in order to preserve the beautiful texture of the wood and at the same time additionally protect.

The advantages of wooden bricks include:

  • environmental friendliness of the material;
  • ease of assembly - wooden brick is lightweight, even one master can handle the process. The accuracy of the grooves is guaranteed by modern computer production technologies, so the construction process is comparable to assembling a Lego constructor. Locks are fixed by simply tapping with a mallet;
  • there is no need for special equipment, mortar mixing, fasteners and seals are not needed;
  • the wall turns out to be very beautiful, you can choose the size of the blocks according to your taste and needs;
  • resistance to deformation.

Important! One of the main advantages of houses built of wooden bricks is the almost complete absence of shrinkage, which is inevitable in the construction of log cabins or buildings made of laminated veneer lumber. Dried bricks will not lose their strict geometric shape, set in production. This quality is due to the small size of the block. They dry out much faster than solid logs or solid beams. There is almost no internal stress in small details, the walls will not crack.

You can immediately install windows and doors into a wall made of wooden bricks, no need to wait for shrinkage. In addition, inside the house you do not have to deal with finishing, although in general, such walls can be sheathed with plasterboard, painted - all at the request of the owner.

The disadvantages of wooden bricks are the same as those of wood - susceptibility to decay, fire hazard, and the risk of pests. However, the use of fire retardants and antiseptics helps to cope with these disadvantages. Best of all, if the protective impregnation is carried out directly in production.

Important! It is customary to divide wood bricks into grades - from "C" to "Extra". The quality will vary markedly.

As for the price of wooden bricks, it is approximately 2–2.5 times lower than that of the same volume of laminated veneer lumber. This is another advantage. However, even the cheapest type of wood blocks will cost more than a cubic meter of ordinary ceramic bricks. However, the absence of costs for mortar, finishing and savings on the foundation, which can be made lighter for a wooden house due to the lower weight of the walls, compensates for this difference.

The construction of a house made of wooden bricks has two secrets - for laying the first row, a support bar is used, which runs along the foundation, to which the blocks are attached with support bars. Two walls are being built, with a void between them, where you can fill in insulation, for example, simple sawdust. The presence of voids allows you to conveniently hide communications. Wooden spacers with profiled ends are located between the walls.

The total thickness of the outer wall can be made different - usually from 300 to 600 mm. This will not change the consumption of wooden bricks, because you simply leave more space between the two walls.

We admit that we cannot yet say for sure how durable houses made of wooden bricks are - the material is new, has just begun to be used. So far, there are only reviews of relatively high heat preservation rates in such buildings, as well as the ease of assembling walls from wooden bricks.
