First of all, it is important to take care of the planting material. You can also plant beans, crushed or whole, but the highest germination rate will give the husked seeds. You can buy them at gardening stores. The best yield is in the zoned varieties; for our climate, such varieties of peanuts as Stepnyak, Krasnodarsky, Valencia Ukrainian were specially bred.
You can start preparing a bed for peanuts in the fall. It's good if the precursors of the nut are pumpkin, for example, cucumbers or zucchini, but after the rest of the legumes, it is better not to plant peanuts. The garden bed is dug deep, filled with organic fertilizers. For the peanut, you should choose the most illuminated place to provide it with plenty of sun.
In the spring, the garden bed will have to be cultivated and the furrows prepared for planting, placing them at a distance of 70 centimeters from each other. It is advisable to apply phosphorus fertilizers.
To speed up the ripening process of peanuts, seedlings can be grown at home in temperate climates. The seeds are left on a damp cloth or cotton wool for a couple of days to germinate. Then they are planted in peat or ordinary pots with moist and nutritious soil. This can be done at the end of April, so that at the end of May, when the threat of frost is no longer there, plant seedlings of peanuts in open ground.
In warmer climates, you can plant seeds directly on the beds, the distance between the bushes should be 20 centimeters. The seeds are planted to a depth of 6 to 8 centimeters. If frosts in May are not uncommon in your climate, you can cover the bed with peanuts with foil or build a small mobile greenhouse.
A peanut will begin to germinate if the soil has warmed up to plus 14 degrees, before that, you should not plant seeds or seedlings.
Peanuts bloom with pretty yellow flowers, bushes can reach 75 centimeters in height, but in temperate climates they will be slightly smaller, like the nuts themselves. It is not difficult to take care of peanuts after sprouting - in general, as experienced gardeners say, the care process is similar to growing the potatoes we know well.
It is necessary to huddle bushes. The first hilling is carried out when the shoot has reached seven centimeters, then you can repeat the procedure after 10 days so that the stem gradually turns out to be underground. Hilling should be done after watering or rain to keep the soil moist.
It is not necessary to over-water the peanuts, he does not like stagnant water. Watering should be carried out only in case of drought, once every 10 days - this will be enough. Watering should be stopped a month before harvesting.
The fact that the harvest is ripe is evidenced by yellowed peanut leaves. You can also dig in a single bush to see if the seeds are easy to hull from the beans. In our climate, this usually occurs in late September or early October. It is important to remove the peanuts before the first frost, otherwise the harvest may simply be lost! When frozen, seeds will lose their germination and may become bitter and unusable.
It should be remembered that peanuts are harvested in two stages. First, the peanuts should be dug up to the surface, like potatoes, put in rollers so that they dry out a little. This will make the beans easier to separate from the roots. If the autumn weather threatens with rains, then the dug out peanuts, along with shoots and roots, in their entirety, should be transferred to dry in a shed, in the attic, where they can be hung for four days.
The resulting crop of beans should be dried before being stored. Drying temperature should not exceed 40 degrees, care must be taken to ventilate. Store peanuts in beans, hulling the nuts just before eating. For storage, rag bags or racks are suitable; for better preservation, you should choose a cool room, for example, a cellar. By the way, experts believe that roasted peanuts are even healthier than raw ones, so use them with pleasure.
