No matter how smooth the walls may seem at first glance, this is not enough. Before wallpapering or painting the walls, it is necessary to seal the slightest bulges, depressions, cracks and seams. Only then will the final finishing result be flawless. This can be achieved by using various putties. The quality of the entire finish depends to a large extent on how high-quality and suitable for specific conditions the putty is used. Consider the main parameters that you should pay attention to in order to choose the right filler.

1. Dry or ready-made?

First of all, all putties are divided into two types, depending on the degree of readiness for use: putties sold in the form of dry mixes, and putties, ready to use. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of each of these types of putties, it is easier to make the right choice. So, dry putties, which are usually sold in bags or bags, are cheaper than ready-made mixes. They are easy to transport and store. In addition, the shelf life of dry mixes is much longer than that of finished formulations. The use of dry mixes for putty allows you to prepare the right amount of the composition of the required viscosity. However, it should be borne in mind that a composition prepared on the basis of a dry mixture should be used in a limited and fairly short time. At the same time, the use of dry putty mixtures requires strict adherence to preparation technologies,as well as the use of special tools and is associated with additional costs of time. Ready-made putties are more demanding for storage conditions, but the use of such a composition is not strictly limited in time and does not require additional preparations.

2. Scope of application

When choosing a putty, it is necessary to determine the scope of its application. Depending on it, putties are divided into leveling, finishing, special and universal. Leveling putties are used for preliminary preparation of the treated surface, its leveling. The properties of such putties allow them to be applied in a sufficiently thick layer up to 25 mm. In this way, even large cracks and irregularities can be eliminated. Finishing fillers are usually applied to the leveling layer to close micro cracks and obtain a perfect surface. They are applied in several layers of 0.1-0.2 mm per stage. In this case, the total layer thickness of the finishing putty should not exceed 1 mm. Universal fillers can be used both as a leveling layer and for finishing. Modern polymer compounds, for example, acrylic putty or latex putty can be applied in thick layers without compromising quality, and the structure allows such putties to be used as a finishing coat. Finally, special putties contain special additives and are used for strictly defined purposes.

3. Composition

The decisive factor for the choice of putty is its composition. Depending on the filler, putties are divided into gypsum, cement and polymer. Gypsum putty is white, so it is usually used for interior decoration of premises for painting. Today, gypsum putties are perhaps the most popular. This is explained by the relatively low price and good technical characteristics. Plaster-based putties are elastic, not subject to shrinkage, durable, easy to use. A serious disadvantage of gypsum putties is the inability to withstand high humidity - gypsum collapses, absorbing moisture. Therefore, gypsum filler cannot be used in rooms where high humidity is planned, and for outdoor work.

As a facade putty, as well as in conditions of high humidity, cement putty can be used. Its main advantage is high moisture and water resistance. However, this, and even, perhaps, the low price are the only advantages of this type of putty. Cement putties are gray in color, so they cannot always be used for painting. But most importantly, cement putties are subject to shrinkage, therefore, when they dry, they can form microcracks. In addition, cement putty, unlike gypsum, gains strength over a long period and has low elasticity. Various polymer putties are gaining more and more popularity today. Their higher price is justified by excellent technical characteristics and wide range of applications.Acrylic and latex putties are presented on the market today in a fairly large assortment. Acrylic putty can be provided for both interior and facade work. A distinctive characteristic of acrylic putties is their versatility and ease of use. Acrylic fillers can be used for both roughing and finishing and can be applied in a fairly thick layer on various substrates. High elasticity, good speed of setting and polymerization, ease of processing make it possible to use acrylic putty both in professional work and in everyday life. Latex putty competes with acrylic putty. Latex-based compounds are also characterized by high strength, plasticity and durability. However, they usuallyare odorless and can be successfully used for interior work.

Speaking of various putties, one can also mention such a type as oil putty. But it is used less and less often, mainly under oil paints or enamels. Among the disadvantages of this type of putty should be noted low adhesion, fragility and long drying time.

A significant amount of dry mixes and ready-made compounds for all types of finishing works are presented on the building materials market today. The Vetonit brand products are noticeable and well-known - Vetonit putty, which has proven itself from the best side, is represented by various dry mixtures, which, with the right choice, provide a high quality finish. The catalog of building mixtures contains products of many other manufacturers, both domestic and foreign. Knowing what to look for, it will not be difficult to make a choice.
