Drilling metal

When drilling a hole in metal with a hand drill, the drill will usually jam. A wooden cork, previously driven into the hole, will help to correct this defect.

Drilling wood

Drilling a large hole in the board at home is very difficult, because the shank of a large drill cannot be clamped in the chuck of a hand drill. A hole with a diameter of 15 to 40 mm can be made using a simple device consisting of a metal rod and a piece of a hacksaw of the right size. Its cutting edges are sharpened at an angle of 45 degrees, inserted into a longitudinal slot previously made in the rod, and soldered or fixed with a wedge, which is driven into the slot.

A sophisticated person will never begin to drill a round log before they securely fix it. He knows that without taking precautions, he will most likely not be able to drill the hole exactly along the intended path, and besides, he may lose the drill.

Put a 1.5-2 cm long spring between the handle and the "slider" of a hand drill for wood, and even with sharp movements of the "slider" a finger will not be pinched, accidentally caught between it and the handle.

When drilling a large hole in wood (20-30 mm), the required drill or perk may not be available. In this case, first drill a hole with a smaller diameter, and then insert a flat steel washer (preferably a new one) into the brace chuck and go through the hole again. This method is also applicable to countersink holes.

There are quite a few devices for cutting out large-diameter holes in sheet material - plastic, plywood, chipboard, etc. You can use the design: a bracket is bent from a strip of steel 2-3 mm thick, its ends are embedded, and a hole is drilled in the center, then the bracket is put on a bolt with a pre-sawn head. For work, the device is clamped in an electric drill chuck.

You can cut a large hole in sheet material in a simple way: clamp a nail in a vice (it will serve as an axis) and a piece of a drill (this will be a cutter). The circle is cut by rotating the sheet around the axis.

A circle of any diameter from plywood can be cut accurately, neatly and quickly using a wooden plank and two sharp nails driven into the plank.

Cutting large diameter circles, for example from thin sheets of plywood, is also a kind of drilling. Admixture drill. It is not difficult to make it.

A pencil sharpener cutter (sold separately) can be used successfully for boring holes in wood and plastic. It is fixed in the chuck of an electric drill and the edges of the hole are processed.

If it is necessary to drill a through hole in the wall, but the length of the drill is not enough, what to do? Try this operation in two steps: on one side of the wall and on the other. For many jobs, sandpaper has to be wrapped around a block. For sanding small parts, it is easier to use a matchbox instead of a block. It is always at hand and it is very easy to fix the skin on it. A piece of the required size is placed on top of the open box, the edges are folded inward and the boxes are pushed in.

A travel soap dish can be turned into a sanding tool. Replacing the worn out sandpaper with a new one is a matter of a few seconds.

When sanding small parts with sandpaper, it is easy to damage the skin on your fingertips. This can be avoided by placing sandpaper on a block, bending the edges and clamping it in a vice.

When sanding wood and metal objects with a large surface, it is convenient to use an attachment of two wooden blocks connected by a strip of leather. The sandpaper is attached with the sharp ends of nails driven into the top bar.

Another way to attach the skin to the bar. Insert one end of the skin into the slanting cut, secure the other with a pushpin.

Sandpaper (on any basis) is best cut with a nail. Its tip is carried out several times along the wrong side of the sheet, and then the desired piece is torn off. The edge is flat, not stretched.
