One of the most essential details that determine the appearance of any room is the ceiling. High-quality ceiling finishes give the rooms extra comfort and elegance. Of the many types of ceiling coverings, the simplest and relatively inexpensive is the adhesive ceiling. It consists of square or rectangular tiles made of extruded polystyrene, or, as it is also called, styrofoam, in other words, foam. They are simple and laminated with a film, white and colored. Often the front surface is covered with a film painted like wood, matting, mother of pearl, fabric or stone. Also, the surfaces of square tiles can have a relief texture that imitates stucco or woodcarving. The standard size of such tiles: 50x50 cm, 100x16.5 cm. Adhesive ceilings are completed with ceiling plinths, shaped profiles, decorative rosettes in the color of polyurethane tiles and beams, and can transform even the most modest room beyond recognition.

Application. Adhesive ceilings are recommended for ceilings in residential areas: offices, bedrooms, etc. Can be used in kitchens, but only tiles laminated with a protective film. These ceiling tiles can be glued to almost any surface: concrete, asbestos cement, plaster, brickwork, gypsum and particle boards.

Installation. Panels of glue ceilings are simply glued to the base ceiling, the surface of which must be prepared in advance: clean the loose areas of the brickwork, remove old wallpaper and glue paints, wash off and clean off the whitewash, fill up cracks and holes with putty. The substrate must be dry, clean and free from grease, strong and as smooth as possible. It is desirable to grind gypsum boards or gypsum plaster before pasting. It is advisable to prime the surfaces made of materials prone to wetting (plywood, chipboard) before pasting.

For gluing panels to the surface, PVA glue is usually used, which is excellent for these purposes, and also has a relatively low price, other types of universal adhesives. Better, however, is an adhesive specially designed for ceiling coverings. Firstly, then, if necessary, you can easily peel off the tiles without damaging them. Secondly, using this glue, there is no need to carefully prepare the surface - just remove the dust. The adhesive has the ability to penetrate the previously applied finish, "bonding" and strengthening the surface to be bonded.

Installation of ceiling tiles is carried out as follows: the ropes are pulled diagonally between opposite corners of the ceiling. The center is marked at the point of their intersection. Further, through the center designated in this way, two straight lines are drawn crosswise from wall to wall, dividing the room into four parts. Apply a thin, continuous layer of glue to the back of the tile to be glued. The first tile is glued to the designated center of the ceiling. Subsequent tiles are glued in parallel rows along straight lines drawn from wall to wall. The edge of the ceiling between the wall and the ceiling is glued with cornices (shaped profiles, wooden lath, etc.). Remains of glue that have got on the surface during gluing are immediately washed off with a wet sponge.

Non-laminated tiles allow subsequent painting with water-based paint. By adding the desired pigment to it, you can harmoniously combine the ceiling in color or shade with the wall decoration, wallpaper and furnishings.

Ceiling plinths, cornices and fillets represent the ideal opportunity to complete the decoration of a room and give it a unique flavor. Whether classic or modern, white, matching wood or colored - ceiling cornices can optically change the proportions of a room, emphasize its boundaries or harmoniously combine transitions. The use of skirting boards improves the overall appearance of the ceiling and makes it easier to adhere tiles to the edges of the ceiling. The combination of ceiling rosettes and skirting boards is a great modern solution based on classic traditions. The classic series of solid polystyrene profiles with stucco patterns transform a simple room into a grand hall. With outwardly indistinguishable resemblance to the road and heavy stucco molding, they are practically weightless and easily mounted on the wall.

Care. Laminated ceiling tiles are washable. To do this, use a damp sponge, soap and warm water, just do not fill the planks with water.

Non-laminated ones are wiped with a dry cloth or vacuum cleaner with a soft nozzle. Small stains of dirt can be removed with a regular eraser.

Properties. Glue ceilings are very easy and quick to install, help hide irregularities and other defects in your ceiling, make it possible to finish the ceiling for a room of almost any layout without any problems. Its sticker does not require any special devices and skills and can be easily done by yourself. As we said, they can be glued to any surface (concrete, brickwork, gypsum and particle boards). They have good heat and sound insulating properties - after all, a centimeter layer of foam.

They provide color consistency to the surface. Various types of surface textures can give a room a unique style. Some types of slabs allow you to create a continuous pattern throughout the ceiling, while others, with a geometric surface structure, create an additional perspective effect in the room.

And yet, despite such obvious advantages, it should be noted that such ceilings are not very durable. Some of them cannot stand dampness. Polystyrene does not like bright sunlight; when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, it turns yellow over time. An important disadvantage of such ceilings is the large number of joints and seams between the panels. Because of this, the ceiling covering does not give the impression of a solid surface. Also, adhesive ceilings do not allow the installation of built-in lights.

There is also such a nuance in perception: for some, this type of ceiling decoration, divided into squares, resembles a soviet catering design (although since then their design has stepped far forward). The ceiling, divided into even squares, "crushes" some.

Prices. Conventional Russian-made ceiling panels cost about 20 rubles apiece (imported ones - from 60 rubles). But they cannot be washed, and in damp rooms they quickly lose their presentation. The moisture resistant panels can be washed and glued in the bathroom. True, their cost is higher: Russian ones will cost 50 rubles, imported ones - 80 rubles. Colored panels are more expensive: ours - about 80 rubles, imports - over 100. The cost is 20 sq. m of ceiling with glue - from 1,700 rubles to 10,000 rubles. A running meter of a ceiling plinth costs from 30 to 50 rubles. The price of a branded adhesive for styrofoam ceiling tiles is 15-30 rubles per kilogram.

Glued ceilings are a traditional, but not very common way of decorating ceilings in homes. If the usual whitewash seems too primitive, and you don’t pull financially for more complex solutions, why not try? You just need to think carefully about whether the panels you like are suitable for the room that you are going to decorate with them. And consult with professionals.
