Video: We Test Parquet Varnishes

2023 Author: Douglas Hoggarth | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-05-24 11:23
The word "parquet" comes from the French parquet and denotes a floor of unpainted planks, tightly laid in a geometric pattern, as well as the planks themselves. In Russia, since the time of Peter the Great, parquet has been widely used to decorate palace interiors.
Frequent washing of the parquet is contraindicated, therefore, to protect it from dirt, it was rubbed with beeswax, bringing it to an elegant shine with a cloth. Later, special mastics appeared, first based on turpentine, and then on a water basis. Of course, this kind of care is good, but it takes a lot of time and effort.
Finally, varnishes have revolutionized parquet floor care.
HOW WE TESTED
Almost all materials were provided by the manufacturers. The test was carried out by specialists in the accredited testing laboratory "ITs Lakokraska" OJSC "NPF" Spectrum LK "in Moscow.
The compositions were applied according to the manufacturers' recommendations on samples of block parquet (we took oak), glass or steel plates, depending on the requirements for test methods. Curing of varnishes was carried out at a temperature of + 20 ± 2 degrees Celsius for the time specified in the instructions for use. Before testing, the samples were kept under normal conditions for two weeks.
Before publishing, we familiarized manufacturers with the results. Not everyone was happy. By order of the representative of Benjamin Moore in the testing center ANO NTsNTU "Cortest", a repeated study of five varnishes out of 10 tested by us (the article describes 8 tested compositions) according to the following indicators: hardness; impact strength and abrasion resistance of the film; resistance to static effects of water and 0.5% detergent solution.
General patterns can be traced in the results of both laboratories - they are of the same order. And only one test became a stumbling block - abrasion by sand - it differed in "ITs Lakokraska" and "Cortest" by about 9 times. Therefore, we decided not to consider it, since the reason for such a serious "disagreement" remained not fully understood. The conclusion is this: the results of tests in various accredited laboratories differ to some extent. This means that some comparisons of products can be made only by the result of one. This is what we do.
Appearance. At the beginning of testing, the decorative properties of the resulting coating (color and quality) were evaluated visually under natural scattered light.
This is not the first time we have tested parquet varnishes, so there is something to compare the results with. In particular, at the beginning of 2002, the laboratory "IC Lakokraska" tested alkyd-urethane compounds on our order. When compared visually, water-based varnish coatings appear more matte. This is the specificity that should be considered when choosing.
The mass fraction of non-volatile substances shows how much varnish will remain on the surface after the solvent has evaporated (if there is too much of it in the composition, a thin film will form, respectively, the varnish consumption will be large, and the coating will ultimately cost more). This parameter is determined according to GOST 17537.
Two-layer coating thickness. Manufacturers recommend applying the material in a thin or thick layer, without specifying specific numbers. We tried to fulfill the manufacturers' wishes for the application technology and determined the thickness of the obtained one-layer and two-layer coating.
Drying time. Usually parquet is varnished in two or three layers, so we were interested in when it is possible to apply the next layer of material (degree of drying 3) and whether it is realistic to cope with varnishing the floor in one or two days. In accordance with GOST 19007, varnishes were applied to glass plates and the time was recorded after which a sheet of paper, which was on the coating under a load of 200 g for a minute, no longer adhered to it and left no traces.
Flexural elasticity. During operation, the bases slightly change their size. Wood, for example, swells from high humidity, therefore, it is important to know how elastic the varnish film is. The essence of the check is as follows. According to GOST 6806, a metal plate is bent around a rod made of the same material. The minimum diameter of the rod, at which the varnish film does not break, will be an indicator of elasticity.
Impact strength of the film. It is expressed in centimeters, denoting the maximum height, from where a weight of 1 kg falls onto a varnished metal plate, without causing mechanical damage to the film - cracks, crumples, flaking (GOST 4765-73). Accordingly, the higher the indicator (both literally and figuratively), the less likely it is that a heavy object falling on your varnished floor will ruin the coating.
The hardness of the material. She is "responsible" for how easy it is to leave a scratch on the lacquer film. Surface hardness is determined by the ME-3 pendulum device (GOST 5233-89). For example, for domestic urethane varnishes, the average hardness in a single-layer coating is 0.5-0.6 c.u. This is a good indicator, and it served as a starting point for us to evaluate the materials.
Abrasion resistance is the most important parameter for varnishes. I would like to immediately clarify. Each material is designed for a specific purpose and, in accordance with this, has certain properties. For example, at home, high abrasion resistance is not needed, so you can use an inexpensive varnish with a small indicator. But for a gym or a checkpoint you will have to "fork out".
According to GOST 20811-75, we determined this parameter by method B as the difference in the masses of the varnished plate before and after abrasion with a grinding "sandpaper". Since varnishes have different densities, it is more correct to compare materials in terms of volumetric indicators, that is, how much material is removed from a unit surface. The smaller the result, the better.
Water resistance. Despite the fact that "water procedures" are not recommended for parquet, sometimes situations arise when it is necessary. We decided to test the coatings for water resistance in accordance with GOST 9.403 (method A - immersion). The sides and ends of the piece parquet were covered with two layers of varnish with or without primer, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations. After complete drying, they were kept for 14 days at a temperature of +20 degrees Celsius. Then the samples were immersed by two-thirds in a container with water and "languished" there for 10 days, periodically evaluating their appearance and protective properties.
Resistant to detergents. Housewives know that if you add washing powder to the water, then dirt will come off any coating faster, and you will have to rub less. This test is "proof from contradiction" - the parquet flooring is not washed with water and even more so with the use of similar means. What happens if you don't take it seriously, our results show.
The prepared samples were placed in a 0.5% solution of Lotus powder (GOST 9.403-80) for 10 days (according to the standard, the duration of such a test is only 15 minutes). After that, the coatings were examined and visible changes were recorded.
Durability. Accelerated climatic tests were carried out cyclically in accordance with GOST 9.401-91 (method 1) and simulated the conditions of a heated air-conditioned room. Each cycle involved holding the samples for two hours in a moisture chamber at a temperature of +40 degrees Celsius and a relative air humidity of 100%, then one hour in the same chamber with the heating turned off. Then they were placed in an artificial weather apparatus of the "Xenotest" type and kept there at +60 degrees Celsius under UV irradiation with periodic irrigation with water.
Let us warn you right away that the results obtained give an assessment of the weather resistance of the coating only indoors. Mechanical stress and possible damage during use are not considered here. Five test cycles correspond to two years of operation.
Beckers Parkettlack 80
One-component acrylic-polyurethane-based varnish (Sweden)

PURPOSE: for interior work - processing of wooden floors of all types.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
APPEARANCE: in the liquid state it looks like milk, after drying it forms a glossy transparent surface with a yellowish tint.
DENSITY: 1.03 kg / l.
SHARE OF DRY SUBSTANCES: 30%.
CONSUMPTION: for the first layer - 1 liter per 8-10 square meters, for the second and subsequent layers - 1 liter per 10-12 square meters.
DRYING: "tack-free" - 1 hour at +23 degrees Celsius and 50% relative humidity. The next coat is applied after 2-4 hours. Good ventilation and higher temperatures will reduce the drying time. Resistant to loads after 24 hours, intensive use of the coating is recommended to start no earlier than 7 days, including subjecting it to wet cleaning with detergents.
THINNER: water (if necessary).
STORAGE: at least two years in a tightly closed container in a warm, but not hot dry place. Protect from freezing.
PACKAGING: 1 liter plastic cans and 5 and 15 liter cans.
TEST RESULTS
HARDNESS: readings of the ME-3 device - 0.84 c.u. and 0.58 c.u. when measured in one and two layers, respectively. Moreover, the first figure is higher than the average hardness of Russian polyurethane varnishes. It indicates a low probability of scratches on the material during operation.
STRENGTH ON IMPACT: a drop of a load from a height of 100 cm withstood both one and two-layer coating, while maintaining high elasticity. Therefore, accidental dropping of objects should not cause significant damage to the varnish. If the wooden base is deformed, the film will follow it, like leather.
ABRASION RESISTANCE: when abraded with "sandpaper", the Parkettlack 80 has become a leader. Its result is only 0.19 cubic mm / sq. Cm.
EXPOSURE TO WATER: the varnish "stood" in water for a whole week before irreversible processes began: first, the color of the surface changed slightly, then the coating peeled off with scales along the grain of the wood. The same effect was observed on the sample after 10 days in a household detergent solution.
The varnish is unlikely to have to deal with such heavy loads, unless there will be a "worldwide flood" (however, any other varnish will not "like it" either), but it will withstand rare wet cleaning without problems.
DURABILITY: Beckers Parkettlack 80 passed the test perfectly, not changing one iota after 25 cycles, corresponding to 10 years of use in a heated, air-conditioned room.
ECOLOGICAL: after drying, it is safe for humans and animals.
LIMITATIONS: Do not cover dark red parquets, such as brown beech and dark woods such as panga-panga, with the composition, as this will change their color.
APPLICATION: the composition should not be diluted with anything, so as not to violate its durability; do not use a roller for application!
Untreated wood is thoroughly cleaned of dirt and dust. Parquet with a good condition of the varnish layer is pre-cleaned with sandpaper, vacuumed, then washed and allowed to dry. Otherwise they cycle.
Shake the packaging thoroughly before use to obtain a homogeneous consistency.
For untreated floors, varnish is often used as a primer. It is dispersed over the entire area with a metal spatula. After 1-2 hours the surface is treated with sandpaper ("zero") and dust is removed.
Parkettlack is applied thickly and evenly, avoiding the formation of puddles, with a wide brush with good bristles (preferably special for varnishing the floor) or with a wallpaper brush. Professionals can use the applicator. The dried layer is sanded after 1-2 hours, dust is removed. Previously unlacquered wood is usually treated with three coats of varnish.
The work is carried out at a temperature not lower than +10 degrees Celsius.
CONCLUSION OF THE LABORATORY: Beckers Parkett-lack 80 forms a smooth, transparent surface with a yellowish tint. It dries quickly, has high elasticity, hardness, impact strength and meets the requirements of domestic standards for resistance to water and detergents.
"Laboratory" durability for indoor use is at least 10 years.
As the manufacturer recommends, Parkettlack 80 is more suitable for apartments, and for all living quarters except for the kitchen, and in the hallway it is advisable to put a special rug on the lacquered floor that absorbs moisture.
BonaTech Home
Water-based one-component varnish based on polyurethane-acrylic dispersion (Sweden)

PURPOSE: for interior work - covering parquet and wooden floors in rooms with normal abrasion load, as well as for wooden items of interior decoration.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
APPEARANCE: transparent composition; after drying, forms a homogeneous transparent polymer film. It is supplied in three versions: glossy, semi-matt, matt.
DENSITY: 1.02 kg / l.
DRY MATTER (by weight): 35%.
CONSUMPTION: 100-120 g / m2 in one layer; about 1 liter per 8-10 square meters in one layer when covered with a roller or varnish brush.
DRYING: the next layer is applied after 1-2 hours at + 18-22 degrees Celsius and relative humidity from 50 to 75%. You can carefully walk on the surface after 8 hours, and lay carpets or carpets after one and a half to two weeks.
THINNER: The varnish is ready to use.
STORAGE: 12 months in original, tightly closed original packaging, protected from moisture and direct sunlight.
PACKAGING: plastic containers of 1 and 5 liters.
TEST RESULTS
HARDNESS: quite high results were recorded for this parameter (0.76 c.u. - one and 0.63 c.u. - two layers). On such a coating, the likelihood of scratches is small.
STRENGTH ON IMPACT: the film of varnish did not "endure" the fall of the load even from a height of 5 cm. It is hard, but at the same time fragile, not designed for shock loads.
ABRASION RESISTANCE: the result of this measurement is 1.0 cubic mm / sq.cm, which also determines the scope of the material - floor and parquet with low operational load, furniture, skirting boards and other wooden products.
EXPOSURE TO WATER: after 24 hours of "water treatment" the color and shine of the sample changed, and after 72 hours the film began to peel off.
The days of staying in a 0.5% solution of detergent also did not pass without a trace: the varnished die darkened strongly, as the water made its way to the tree, and about half of the surface wrinkled.
Normal operating conditions do not imply such extreme loads, no one will specially "keep" puddles on the parquet for days, and the coating will withstand light damp cleaning with a well-wrung out cloth.
DURABILITY: Climatic tests, starting from the 5th cycle, resulted in the formation of white spots on the film, which could disappear if the matter was over, but by the 25th, last cycle, the situation only worsened.
ECOLOGICAL: after drying, it is safe for humans and animals.
APPLICATION: on a dry, well-sanded base, free from oils, dust, wax and other contaminants. The temperature of the material and the room must be above +15 degrees Celsius. Before processing the old coating, a test varnishing of a small area is carried out, having previously sanded it, and left for two to three days, and then the adhesion of the new varnish with the old one is checked with a coin. In case of a positive result, the entire surface is sanded.
The composition is applied evenly, avoiding the formation of puddles, using a roller for water varnishes and varnish brushes in two to three passes, or first use Bona Tech Prime (one coat), and then Bona Tech Home (two coats). Before the last layer, sanding is carried out with 120 sandpaper.
CONCLUSION OF THE LABORATORY: Bona Tech Home forms an even, transparent, colorless film. It dries quickly, has high elasticity in a single coat, hardness. The limit of resistance to water and detergents is 24 hours.
The name of the varnish clearly indicates the scope of its application - Home, which in English means "home", and houses walk on the floor in slippers or cover it with a carpet. Bona Tech Home's impact and abrasion properties make it highly recommended for these conditions.
"Laboratory" coating durability - not less than three years. To increase this period, it should be looked after with the help of special Bona products.
Crown "Parquet lacquer 90"
Water-based polyurethane-acrylic varnish (Sweden)

PURPOSE: for interior work on wooden floors, parquet, wooden stairs, joints, untreated cork, previously varnished surfaces.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
APPEARANCE: transparent composition; after drying it forms a homogeneous glossy film.
DENSITY: 1.02 kg / l.
SHARE OF DRY SUBSTANCES: 35%.
CONSUMPTION: 1 liter for 7.5-8.5 sq. M. For the finished coating.
DRYING: the next coat is applied after 6-8 hours at + 15-20 degrees Celsius and 65% relative humidity. You can walk and move furniture on the surface after 12 hours. Lay carpets or carpeting - after a week.
THINNER: water.
STORAGE: 2 years in original packaging, protected from moisture and direct sunlight.
PACKAGING: plastic cans of 1 and 2.5 liters.
TEST RESULTS
HARDNESS: according to the ME-3 device, the hardness of a two-layer coating (0.36 cu) was almost two times less than that of a single-layer coating (0.73 cu). Compared with the average data, the latter value exceeds the hardness of polyurethane varnishes.
IMPACT STRENGTH: withstood a 1 kg drop from a height of 60 cm (one layer) and 80 cm (two layers). Both indicators are quite high. The film will remain intact even if something falls on the floor.
ABRASION RESISTANCE: "sandpaper" abrasion result of 0.35 cc / cm2 - one of the best results among the products that passed our test.
EXPOSURE TO WATER: "Parquet Varnish 90" has shown good resistance to static effects of water and detergents. Only the fourth day of "bathing" of the lacquered parquet in the water was "marked" by a slight loss of its luster, which would not have been noticeable over a larger area.
From the 72nd hour of the stay of the sample in a solution of household detergent, the wood under the varnish film darkened slightly, and on the seventh day it turned dark brown. After the end of the test and exposure in air for several days, the shade of the surface began to recover, but never returned to the original.
DURABILITY: after the 20th test cycle, the gloss of the coating has slightly decreased. This could only be noticed by comparing the reference and the tested samples.
ECOLOGICAL: after drying, it is safe for humans and animals.
APPLICATION: the new wooden floor is thoroughly washed, scrubbed and free from dust. Previously varnished surfaces are also washed with detergents, then degreased with an aqueous solution of acetic acid (3 ml of a 24% solution of acetic acid per 8-10 liters of water). The entire area is cleaned with sandpaper No. 120-150 to a matte state, dirt and dust are removed with a vacuum cleaner.
One layer of varnish is applied to the new tree, after drying (approximately 1 hour), the entire area is treated with "sandpaper" No. 120 without strong pressure and vacuum cleaned.
The varnish is applied in two layers with a brush or roller.
CONCLUSION OF THE LABORATORY: Crown "Parquet varnish 90" forms an even uniform film with a yellowish tint. It dries quickly, has high elasticity, hardness and impact strength, meets the requirements of domestic standards for resistance to static effects of water and detergents.
The varnish is suitable for floors with a low operational load, for example, in living rooms, bedrooms. In the hallway, where there is a higher intensity of traffic, it is better to lay a carpet. The "laboratory" durability of the coating is about 10 years.
Dulux Trade Diamond Glaze
Acrylic-urethane varnish (England)

PURPOSE: for interior work on wood surfaces, for example, floors, pressed cork floor tiles, fibreboard and chipboard, stairs, skirting boards, platbands, table top surfaces, racks.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
APPEARANCE: transparent composition; after drying it forms a homogeneous glossy film.
DENSITY: 1.4 kg / l.
DRY MATTER (by weight): 32%.
CONSUMPTION: 1 liter for 12-20 square meters for cleaned wood and 20-25 square meters for previously varnished wood.
DRYING: "tack-free" - 1-2 hours. The next layer is applied after 2-4 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. You can carefully walk on the surface in soft shoes after 12 hours. Carpets or carpets are laid not earlier than after 7 days.
THINNER: water.
STORAGE: 5 years in original packaging, protected from frost, moisture and direct sunlight.
PACKAGING: metal cans of 0.75; 2.5 and 5 liters.
TEST RESULTS
HARDNESS: tests on the ME-3 device showed a consistently high film hardness - 0.68 c.u. This figure exceeds the average statistics for domestic polyurethane varnishes. Therefore, when moving furniture, there is little chance of scratching the floor treated with Dulux Trade Diamond Glaze.
IMPACT STRENGTH: one and two layers withstood without destruction the drop of a load of 1 kg from a height of 100 cm. Considering this result in conjunction with the high elasticity of the varnish film (1 mm), we can conclude that the coating is not afraid of falling of various objects. It will "to the bitter end" hold on to the base, protecting it.
ABRASION RESISTANCE: the result of abrasion with a special "sandpaper" turned out to be good (0.3 cubic mm / sq. Cm). In addition, the varnish excelled by showing high resistance to sand abrasion when tested in two laboratories, the results of which we have. It is reliable and will last a long time even under intense loads.
EXPOSURE TO WATER: only by the end of the fourth day of "bathing" in water, the material began to fade, but retained its protective properties.
On the fourth day of the lacquered parquet being in the detergent solution, moisture penetrated under the film and the wood darkened slightly. After seven days, the parquet floor turned dark brown. Then, after exposure to air, the color recovered slightly, but never returned to its original color.
DURABILITY: the samples came to the "finish" of the climatic tests, only slightly darkening. During use, this degree of color change is imperceptible, if not compared with the reference coating.
ECOLOGICAL: after drying, it is safe for humans and animals.
APPLICATION: grease, wax, polish can be removed with white spirit or sugar soap. Old varnish layers with defects are removed, and good ones, just like new wood, are cleaned with a sanding "sandpaper" (wood - in the direction of the grain), then freed from dust.
Before use, the composition is thoroughly mixed, avoiding the appearance of air bubbles, and then a small area is treated for the sample. In case of a positive result, apply two or three coats with a brush or roller evenly and consistently along the fibers, trying to keep the "wet edge".
CONCLUSION OF THE LABORATORY: Dulux Trade Diamond Glaze forms a smooth, uniform, colorless surface. It dries quickly, has high elasticity, hardness, meets the requirements of domestic standards for water resistance and resistance to detergents.
Confirming its name, the varnish has shown excellent impact and abrasion resistance.
The "laboratory" durability of the coating is about 10 years.
According to the sum of indicators, the varnish turned out to be the best, but at the same time its price is quite high. The material will be the optimal solution for floors in rooms where a large flow of visitors is expected, and for surfaces subject to high wear and tear. If the coating is not supposed to be actively exploited, then for this case, the Dulux assortment includes the traditional Interior Varnish, the cost of which is about three times lower.
Kiilto Aku de Luxe
One-component water-borne polyurethane-based acrylate varnish (Finland)

PURPOSE: for interior work - varnishing of parquet, wooden floors and panels.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
APPEARANCE: composition similar to milk; after drying it forms a homogeneous glossy film.
DENSITY: about 1 kg / l.
SHARE OF DRY SUBSTANCES: 35%.
CONSUMPTION: about 1 liter per 25 m2 in one layer with a steel trowel and about 1 liter per 10 m2 - when applied with a felt trowel or brush.
DRYING: next layer - after 15-30 minutes. when applied with a steel trowel, in other cases - after 2 hours at +20 degrees Celsius and 50% relative humidity. You can walk on the surface after 1-2 days. The varnish acquires its final strength after 2 weeks.
THINNER: water.
STORAGE: 12 months in an unopened container. Otherwise - six months in a tightly closed original packaging in a cool room at a positive temperature.
PACKAGING: 1 plastic container; 3 and 10 liters.
TEST RESULTS
HARDNESS: Aku de Luxe has shown high hardness. Scratches on such a film are rare.
IMPACT STRENGTH: This test - 15 cm - can be described as "delicate" and should therefore be protected from shock loads.
ABRASION RESISTANCE: the result of measuring the parameter allows us to conclude that the varnish is best used in places with a small human flow, for example, in residential apartments, where people do not walk on the surface in street shoes and lay a carpet. In addition, the material is perfect for processing wood panels, doors, skirting boards, etc.
EXPOSURE TO WATER: the film reacted to the presence of water during the day with a slight darkening, on the second day its gloss decreased.
In a 0.5% detergent solution, the sample lasted longer in its original form, darkening only on the third day.
DURABILITY: until the end of the test (25 cycles) no changes were noticed on the floor.
ECOLOGICAL: after drying, it is safe for humans and animals.
APPLICATION: previously varnished floors in good condition are cleaned, lightly sanded (paper no. 180), remove dust and varnished in one or two layers (oil, urethane or alkyd coatings are removed completely).
In untreated and sanded floors, the gaps are filled with PaSi parquet mastic or a putty consisting of sanding dust and a special Urpo primer. Then three coats of Urpo are applied over the entire surface, followed by two or three coats of Aku de Luxe along the grain of the wood.
CONCLUSION OF THE LABORATORY: Aku de Luxe forms an even, uniform, colorless film. It dries quickly and has high hardness. The material complies with domestic standards for resistance to water and detergents.
As stated by the manufacturer, it is better to varnish floors with a low abrasion load, for example, in living rooms, where the covering is carefully used or protected with a carpet. In addition, it will be good for finishing panels and furniture. Then the durability of the coating will be at least 10 years.
Other products from Kiilto, such as Uno, Kalle, are specially designed for floors in rooms with high traffic.
Petri dream high gloss
Water based polyurethane varnish (USA)

PURPOSE: for interior and exterior work on wood, metal and plastic surfaces. For the treatment of floors and places subject to high stress, use the hardening additive Petri Hardener, which increases the resistance of the varnish to abrasion by 6 times.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
APPEARANCE: in the jar - milky liquid; after drying it forms a homogeneous glossy film.
DENSITY: 1.08 kg / l.
SHARE OF DRY SUBSTANCES: 31.7%.
CONSUMPTION: 3.78 liters for 45-55 sq.m.
DRYING: the next layer is applied after 2 hours. Walking in soft shoes is possible rarely and carefully after 12 hours. The maximum resistance to water and detergents is achieved after 7 days.
THINNER: not required.
STORAGE: 10 years in tightly closed original packaging.
PACKAGING: metal cans of 0.946; 3.78 and 7.6 liters.
TEST RESULTS
HARDNESS: Petri Dream showed the best results (0.88 cu - in one and 0.8 cu - in two layers). The lacquer film is hard, scratches from moving furniture and "our smaller brothers" appear on it less often than on other materials we tested.
IMPACT STRENGTH: turned out to be low for both single layer coating (10 cm) and two layer coating (less than 5 cm), therefore it should be protected from shock loads.
ABRASION RESISTANCE: indicator 0.84 cubic mm / sq. Cm dictates the field of application of the product - these are floors in residential premises, in addition, furniture, doors, skirting boards, etc.
EXPOSURE TO WATER: the varnish has good durability: only on the fourth day of exposure of the sample in water, its color slightly changed, and if it is removed at this stage, the original shade will return. At the 168th hour, the film faded considerably.
Petri Dream High Gloss withstood the action of a 0.5% solution of "Lotus" powder excellently. Its shade became a little lighter only after 240 hours (10 days), while after drying it returned to its previous color.
DURABILITY: 15 cycles of "climatic" left large white spots on the sample, 20 cycles - led to a loss of gloss. Ultimately, its shade changed beyond recognition.
ECOLOGICAL: after drying, it is safe for humans and animals.
APPLICATION: The base must be clean and dry. It is freed of wax, oil and any adhesion retarding chemicals. Old defective coatings are removed, and durable ones are cleaned with sandpaper. All irregularities and chips are sealed with a water-based Petri filler, allowed to dry and sanded with the finest grain possible. The dust is removed.
Premises are checked for the presence of cold spots on the walls, floors and warmed up to room temperature. It is recommended to experiment on a small part of the substrate first. The varnish is applied at temperatures above +13 degrees Celsius at least in three thin layers with a brush, roller, spatula or special applicators with obligatory interlayer sanding with fine "sandpaper".
CONCLUSION OF THE LABORATORY: Petri Dream High Gloss forms a smooth, transparent, colorless film. It dries quickly, has high elasticity and hardness, but should be protected from shock loads. In terms of water resistance and resistance to the action of detergents, the varnish meets the requirements of domestic standards.
The material is suitable for treating floors in living rooms, as well as for doors, windows, furniture, wood panels, siding, lining and will last about 6 years.
If higher wear resistance is required, Petri's range of varnishes includes Daimond Hard or a special varnish for sports halls. Maximum protection will be provided by Petri's latest development - Petri Polydex two-component polyurethane varnishes.
Tikkurila Parketti-Assa
Water-borne polyurethane acrylate varnish (Finland)

PURPOSE: for interior work - varnishing of parquet, wooden floors and other wooden surfaces.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
APPEARANCE: composition similar to milk; after drying it forms a homogeneous glossy film.
DENSITY: 1 kg / l.
SHARE OF DRY SUBSTANCES: about 32%.
CONSUMPTION: 1 liter per 10-15 sq.m. in one layer.
DRYING: the next layer is applied after 6-8 hours at +23 degrees Celsius and 50% relative humidity. You can walk on the surface after 12 hours. Laying carpets or carpeting can be done after a week. After two weeks, it fully regains its properties.
THINNER: water.
STORAGE: 3 years in an unopened container, after opening the package - 6 months at a positive temperature.
PACKAGING: plastic jars of 1; 3 and 10 liters.
TEST RESULTS
HARDNESS: the results of measuring the hardness of the coating using the ME-3 device: 0.69 c.u. (one layer) and 0.47 c.u. (two layers). Scratches on such a film do not appear often when chairs and other furniture are moved.
IMPACT STRENGTH: 40 cm - for a single-layer coating and 25 cm - for a two-layer coating with high elasticity (1 mm) can be called a fairly good result.
ABRASION RESISTANCE: Parketti-Assa results in this parameter - 1.3 cubic mm / cm2. Such a material is suitable for floors that are not subject to intensive walking, for example, in residential premises (by the way, they are often covered with a carpet), for processing furniture, baseboards, etc.
EXPOSURE TO WATER: the product showed good resistance to static effects of water and detergents: the surface of the sample lost a little shine only after a week of "swimming" in water, and by the end of the test (10 days), a third of the lacquer film was peeling off the substrate.
The detergent solution “finished” with the sample only by the 24th hour: the color became unrecognizable, and besides, more than half of the area was observed to wrinkle and peel off.
DURABILITY: starting from the 19th cycle, white spots began to appear on the coating.
ECOLOGICAL: after drying, it is safe for humans and animals.
APPLICATION: the base must be dry, clean and free of grease, its temperature, like the air temperature, is above +15 degrees Celsius.
New floors are sanded to a smooth state, the cracks are closed. Previously lacquered parquet is degreased and cleaned from dirt, sanded until matt. Old varnish in poor condition is removed completely, and then, like new wood, treated with Parketti-Assa priming varnish two or three times.
Before applying to an old durable coating, first test a small area to check the compatibility of the new and old materials.
Covering Parketti-Assa is thoroughly mixed and applied in two to three layers with a brush or spatula.
CONCLUSION OF THE LABORATORY: Parketti-Assa forms a smooth, uniform surface with a colorless film. Its positive qualities include: short drying time, high elasticity, hardness and relatively good impact strength. The coating meets the requirements of domestic standards for water resistance and resistance to detergents.
The varnish can be recommended for "home" use, where the parquet is treated with care, protected with a carpet or walked on it in soft slippers. In addition, Parketti-Assa is perfect for varnishing furniture, skirting boards, etc. In such conditions, it will serve for seven years.
Galamix-47
Water-borne polyurethane-acrylic varnish (Russia, Moscow)

PURPOSE: for interior work - varnishing of parquet and plank floors in residential and office premises with an average operational load, as well as other wooden surfaces.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
APPEARANCE: in a liquid state it looks like thick milk, after drying it forms a glossy or semi-gloss transparent surface.
DENSITY: 1.04 kg / l.
SHARE OF DRY SUBSTANCES: 41%.
CONSUMPTION: 1 liter per 10-15 sq.m. in one layer.
DRYING: "to tack" - 30 min. at +23 degrees Celsius and 65% relative humidity; reapplication - after 3-4 hours. Operation in a gentle mode is possible after 24 hours, maximum loads - after 14 days, when the coating acquires final hardness.
THINNER: water.
STORAGE: at least 8 months in an unopened original container.
PACKAGING: plastic buckets 1 each; 2.8 and 10 liters.
TEST RESULTS
HARDNESS: when measured, we got 0.6 c.u. in one and 0.21 cu in two layers. The first result corresponds to the average statistical data for polyurethane varnishes and testifies to the sufficient resistance of Galamix-47 to scratching.
IMPACT STRENGTH: Despite its high elasticity, the coating must be protected from accidental dropping of any objects.
ABRASION RESISTANCE: according to this parameter (0.8 cubic mm / sq.m) "Galamix-47" can be recommended for processing furniture, skirting boards, railings, doors and other wooden surfaces that are not subject to strong abrasion.
EXPOSURE TO WATER: It was not until after 96 hours that the sample placed in water showed peeling of the film from the wood along the grain. The process progressed to the end of the test, and at the 240th hour a slight loss of gloss and lightening were added to it.
Lacquered parquet, which had been in a household detergent solution, changed color after 72 hours. After 168 hours, its gloss decreased and about a third of the surface peeled off.
DURABILITY: for indoor materials, the standard of weather resistance according to GOST is 5 cycles. The varnish complies with this norm, but you should not demand more from it.
ECOLOGICAL: after drying, it is safe for humans and animals.
APPLICATION: the old coating is completely cleaned off. The base is cycled, polished, dust is removed.
It is desirable to apply a primer as the first layer. For this, you can apply a colorless impregnation-primer "Galamiks-51" or a glazing compound "Galamiks-57". Further, the entire area is lightly sanded.
The varnish is thoroughly mixed and applied one or two coats with a brush, roller or spray. It is not necessary to dilute it.
The work is carried out at a temperature not lower than +10 degrees Celsius (optimal - + 18-20 degrees).
CONCLUSION OF THE LABORATORY: "Galamiks-47" forms a transparent colorless surface, dries quickly, has high elasticity, but does not withstand falling objects. It meets the requirements of domestic standards for weather resistance, resistance to water and detergents. "Laboratory" coating durability - about 3 years.
