Previously, upholstery work was carried out mainly with a hammer and small nails, but now? New and unusual not so long ago, staplers today are marching victoriously across the tool market. Many modern models have even "learned" to work with small nails. So down with hammered fingers and naughty little nails! Give productivity!

But seriously speaking, many types of work with a stapler are much more convenient to perform than with a hammer. Firstly, most often one hand is occupied (the second at this time you can correct the sewn material), and secondly, the speed of operations increases incomparably - the staple is "driven in" in one motion.

When nailing anything to wood, this tool is virtually unmatched. Simple examples: attachment to frames and surfaces of various fabrics (draperies, posters, insect screens, canvas, etc.), fixing power cables, furniture upholstery, etc., etc.

TYPES OF STAPLERS

First of all, it is worth distinguishing between mechanical, pneumatic and electrical staplers (sometimes they are also called tackers). The last two types are intended for very large volumes of work and represent industrial and professional equipment. In this review, we will restrict ourselves exclusively to mechanics. Here, too, there is its own "internal" classification, it corresponds to the tasks to be solved and the appearance of the tools: Conventional staplers use flat staples or nails as consumables. To hammer the "fasteners", you need to attach the tool to the surface and press the trigger.

Cable models fix low-voltage wires (up to 50 volts). Cable diameter - 4.5 to 7.5 mm. In accordance with this parameter, the design of the stapler is also selected. Such tools are convenient for laying local area networks, installing all kinds of communication equipment, etc.

Hammer or staple hammers. They hit the material, and with each impact, due to inertia, the next bracket is hammered. They are significantly inferior to conventional and cable staplers in hammering accuracy, but they win in "rate of fire". They are used for work where speed is important, not accuracy: for example, when fixing insulation under the floor or roofing material on the roof.

There are also combined, or universal staplers, which are a "hybrid" of the first two classes. Of the tools that participated in the test, only the Stayer 31510 was such, but this does not mean that other manufacturers do not have such products in their "arsenal".

Note that mechanical staplers are divided (sometimes very conditionally) into household (amateur) and professional. Here the differences are dictated by the very purpose of the tool: in the second case, the technique should have a greater resource and better ergonomics, hence the rejection of plastic parts, a serviced (subject to repair) structure. All this, naturally, increases the cost of products.

CONSUMABLES

Usually, the term "type of staple" means its thickness ("gauge"), although they also differ in width. The most popular "fastener" in Europe - 11.4 mm wide and 0.75 mm thick - belongs to type 53 (or A). On these staples, we carried out the test for most staplers. However, in the general case, the choice is widest: length (otherwise - size) from 4 to 40 mm, thickness from 0.7 to 1.65 mm.

What to choose is determined by the intended task, the capabilities of your stapler and simple logic: the load on the attached material is higher - buy long staples, a fragile substance (for example, a polyethylene greenhouse) - use "fasteners" with greater thickness. To fix the wires, you need to know their maximum diameter.

"To save a penny in order to lose rubles" - this is how you can describe the situation when questionable "consumables" are purchased for a branded instrument. Just in case, we remind you that branded brackets:

  • will not rust, as they are made of stainless steel or galvanized;

    will allow you to appreciate the stapler, as it is made taking into account all tolerances and exposures (thickness, length, angles, etc.), well sharpened, correctly glued into the slipway, etc.;

    provide a guarantee (a prerequisite for warranty service is the use of original consumables).

  • TEST CONDITIONS

    We have tested flat-staple mechanical staplers from various manufacturers. In the review, professional models are side by side with household ones, but despite the fact that the results they show are often similar, one should not forget that in our study, due to time and physical constraints, the most important indicator - a resource - remained unappreciated. So, use common sense when choosing: an amateur instrument is unlikely to last as long as a professional one.

    Our main interest in the models was to test their "performance" on different materials. We chose pine (softwood), larch (hardwood) and chipboard. By the way, the latter is considered one of the most "impenetrable" materials for staplers.

    They drove the staples of the most common type - 53 (provided by Rapid). For a change, we decided to test the tools on two staples: 10 mm long (one of the most popular) and 14 mm (maximum size for the tested class of staplers).

    Two of the eight models that have come into our "field of view" - Remocolor Force-NS and Stayer 31510 - are designed to work with wider "fasteners" with a flat profile and a thickness of 1.2 mm (it is most popular in the USA). These "couple" were tested on their corresponding "consumables" (provided by the Remocolor representative). The size of the staples is the same - 10 and 14 mm.

    Arrow JT21CM

    Professional mechanical stapler (provided by Svyaz-Komplekt)

    CONSUMER ANALYSIS

    CONSTRUCTION: it is a little strange to classify this stapler as professional, but "you cannot argue against the facts" - it is metal, and its case is serviced, that is, it can be repaired. By the way, in the series to which the JT21CM belongs, there is also a plastic - household - model.

    Various staplers, staple hammers and other similar tools of the Arrow brand (made in the USA) are well known in the market, because the company focuses on the creation of such equipment. But, despite the variety of models, this one was chosen for the test, since it is the only one capable of working with staples of the 53rd type (the rest are intended for the wider ones, which are more popular in America). Moreover, the "fastener" of the 14th size is higher than the strength of the "baby", its ceiling is 10 mm. We checked the performance on such brackets.

    The model is as simple as possible - which is what captivates. No adjustments or switches: just charge and go. At the same time, the simplicity of the design and the absence of plastic parts ensure the durability of the tool.

    The use of a spring to actuate the percussion mechanism should, in theory, lead to a greater recoil in comparison with the "spring". However, due to the relatively low impact force, no particular inconvenience is felt. Apparently, for this reason, no rubber inserts are provided either on the body or on the handle.

    TEST RESULTS: the work with 10 staples on soft wood was excellent - the grip angle is small, the effort to release the lever is minimal, there is almost no recoil. "Fasteners" fit tightly, and if you press on the striking part, then it can even be sunk into the material.

    When working on hard wood, the stapler had to be pressed against the surface with the other hand, otherwise the "bar" of the staple barely touched the surface. Hence the conclusion - it is better to use shorter "consumables".

    It turned out to be impossible to work on chipboard with "tenth" brackets - even with strong pressure on the striking part, approximately two-millimeter gaps remain. In general, size 8 or less is preferred for such materials.

    If we talk about the tasks that the stapler coped with, then it is very convenient, since it is small and lightweight. It is worth noting the best result in terms of the distance to the perpendicular surface: using the JT21CM, you can drive the staples close to the wall.

    SUMMARY: the most simplified model (even the lever is not fixed in any way in the lower position). For its class of tasks - the simplest fastening operations - the stapler is perfect, since it has minimal dimensions and weight and does not require much effort to "shoot".

    Novus J-19 EADHG

    CONSUMER ANALYSIS

    CONSTRUCTION: this stapler differs from its everyday "twin" - J-16 only in the execution of the case. As befits a professional tool, the J-19 is made of metal, which provides a longer service life compared to household models "clad" in plastic. It's a bit strange that in this case there are still a few plastic parts on the case. And if the material is not so important for the switches of the "shot" force and the reusable impact mode, then the half-plastic handle and the clamp of the staple feeder cause quite justified concerns.

    Very convenient are such "professional" functions as the shockless release of the lever (you need to pull the handle out of the body and lower it down) and the possibility of fixing it in the lower position using a latch. The first turns out to be very useful when it is necessary to fold the "cocked" tool - there is no need to "shoot into the air" or remove the slipway. The second function provides a significant reduction in the dimensions of the model when it is "transferred" to the "transport" state: the height is reduced by more than half.

    More about the distance stop. There is a plastic part on the support surface of the stapler, which, when folded, does not protrude, but in the extended position creates a corner at a given distance (from 0 to 100 mm with a step of 5 mm) from the striker. They can catch on the edge of the material and drive in the "fastener" at the desired distance along a line parallel to the edge.

    A sharp nose with a striker, protruding 5 mm above the supporting surface, is convenient when you need to "crawl" somewhere.

    The reusable "shot" mode is implemented in the form of disabling the feed mechanism - a striking strike occurs "idle", usually on an unfinished bracket. By the way, here, too, the protruding nose helps out: by slightly pressing the lever and thereby pulling the firing pin inward, we get a narrow window, place it above the bracket, and then the next blow will have to exactly on it.

    The stapler is equipped with a safe reloading system: the magazine cannot be pulled out until the tool is turned upside down. By the way, such a turn at the same time eliminates the loss of a strip of staples - it is simply placed on top in the opening groove.

    TEST RESULTS: the device coped well with all tasks. Even on the most difficult - the 6th - he was able to tightly drive the staples into the chipboard, however, for this he had to press the striking part with his free hand, otherwise there was a gap of about 0.5 mm.

    If you need to sink the "fasteners" into the chipboard, you cannot do without the multiple "shot" mode. It was especially useful for the 6th task. For the rest of the tests, there was no need for it: it turned out to be sufficient to switch the stapler to the hard impact mode and press on the tool. By the way, when switching from a powerful to a weak "shot", the applied effort noticeably changes.

    In general, the model is comfortable, the impact on impact is almost invisible. The gripping angle is large enough, so you have to lean on the surface of the material and use your own gravity (when working "on weight" the hand gets tired rather quickly).

    SUMMARY: a professional model endowed with many functions. There is also a multiple "shot" mode, and a distance stop, and a power switch. The stapler is convenient for large volumes of work, if it is possible to lean on the surface (for use "by weight" the grip angle is too large). Has shown excellent results when tested on hardwoods, which indicates a high impact force. Suitable for the most difficult tasks.

    CONSUMER ANALYSIS

    CONSTRUCTION: Piranha specializes primarily in the production of consumables for Black & Decker. The X70005 stapler is one of the few examples of a "self-contained" tool with this brand.

    This model is quite simple, but for the sake of fairness it should be noted that the Piranha range also includes a device that is closer to the professional class. It is completely made of metal, while the X70005 has a screw for adjusting the impact force and the parts of the staple feeder are plastic. With all that, the body of this household appliance is serviced, which means that if "troubles" arise, it can be repaired.

    To avoid arbitrary opening of the collapsible staple feed mechanism, the stapler is equipped with a special lever that fixes this unit in the assembled state. Besides, as befits a "spring" model, it is equipped with a shock-absorbing rubber insert on the body. The element is clearly not superfluous - the recoil of such devices is stronger than that of "spring" ones.

    To improve the convenience of storage and transportation, the Piranha has a ring that fixes the handle in the lower position.

    TEST RESULTS: The size 14 "fastener" could work more or less acceptably only on soft wood, and even then, pressing the stapler with both hands. Such brackets entered the larch without reaching the wood with the "crossbar"; The 10s also did not provide tight contact. The situation is similar with chipboard. So when working with this device on hard wood and chipboard, "consumables" larger than 8 mm are better not to use.

    The adjusting screw, which is responsible for the power of the "shot", rotates rather tightly, and does not give much choice in terms of impact force.

    Due to the compactness of the stapler, it is quite convenient for them to work, especially if there is support on the surface - then its own weight helps when pressing the lever. When working "on weight" the effort required to "shoot" is quite large - the hand quickly gets tired.

    SUMMARY: household model, convenient for simple operations. Longest staples are only effective when working in soft wood. For more complex tasks, it is better to limit yourself to 8mm "fasteners".

    CONSUMER ANALYSIS

    CONSTRUCTION: All metal, except for the rubberized insert on the body, this professional stapler is part of the Workline series of the famous manufacturer - Rapid. Model R353 is a kind of its "calling card": to form an opinion about the taker, you just need to hold it in your hands.

    The metal device, which has an impressive impact force, is nevertheless executed rather compactly (if not elegantly), and it weighs a little compared to similar professional counterparts. It is felt that the designers thought over every little thing. Despite the seeming simplicity of the stapler, it is functionally equipped with a "full program": a simplified procedure for loading staples, a mode of shockless release of the handle and a power regulator for "shot".

    From other professional models, which also use a spring impact mechanism, this one is distinguished by the presence of a rubber insert on the body. Its task is to absorb recoil (and so small for such a principle of action) and to improve the convenience when squeezing the stapler "on the weight".

    TEST RESULTS: work is pleasant and comfortable. Due to the well-chosen grip angle at normal impact force, very little effort is required to "shoot". At the same time, the compactness of the model allows you to tightly grab it with your palm and press the lever without much effort without leaning on the surface.

    Adjusting the force of impact noticeably changes the force required to "shoot". In the "maximum" position, you have to squeeze the stapler much harder, but what is the result: on the 5th task, the staples fit tightly into the wood, even if you do not press on the tool.

    The R353 did well in the 6th test only if the impact was applied. It was not possible to drown the 14-mm bracket in the chipboard, but it was not difficult to press it tightly to the surface.

    An interesting feature of the model is the uneven distribution of force during the stroke of the lever during the impact. Experience has shown that maximum force should be applied when the handle is already close to the body. In practice, this is very convenient, since it is easier to release more force with a squeezed brush than with a straightened one. This property is especially useful when working without support on the surface and in the mode of maximum impact power.

    It should be noted that, despite the value given in the table, the minimum distance to the perpendicular plane may be less. It increases due to the protrusion (2-3 mm) on the front surface of the stapler at a height of about 30 mm from the striker. This observation is true for some other models as well.

    SUMMARY: great professional model. Compact and lightweight, it is not inferior to competitors in impact force, coping well with all the tasks set in the test. Relatively small grip and actuation angles help minimize effort. The resource of the tool is very long, because all parts are made of metal.

    CONSUMER ANALYSIS

    CONSTRUCTION: R453 is part of the Rapid red range - the Workline series. This model is classified as a household one only because it is made in a plastic case - this reduces the overall life of the stapler. But its weight is very suitable for amateur use.

    In all other respects, R453 is similar to professional devices. The sprung impact mechanism avoids strong kickback, so the body does not need shock absorbing inserts. The stapler handle is completely metal, so its reliability is beyond question.

    Two functions - bumpless release of the lever and fixing it in the lower position by moving "from the body" - are also usually not characteristic of household models.

    Useful little things will also come in handy. So, the loading of consumables is simplified: they are simply put into the chute and pressed by the feeder. Through a special window for control, they monitor the presence of staples or nails.

    An impressive arsenal of design solutions proves that this device is serious and very convenient in everyday life.

    Rapid "color" division into model series simplifies the selection of consumables. The color of the packaging of the Rapid branded staples will certainly match the color of the stapler, and if it is metallic, then the color of the rubber inserts on the case. So for R453 you need to purchase "fasteners" in red packs.

    TEST RESULTS: In testing, the model performed almost as well as the professional R353. Only with the 6th task the stapler coped with difficulty: it was possible to achieve a tight contact of the staple with the chipboard only in the mode of the most powerful "shot" and when pressing the striking part with the second hand. By the way, on the 5th task, with the same reservations, the bracket was even sunk into the wood.

    In all other tests, the R453 is comparable in impact strength to powerful professional models.

    Ergonomics at the highest level: easy and comfortable work. The small angle of capture does not require excessive effort to make the "shot". In addition, there is no need to lean on the surface, especially when the impact force control is in the normal position.

    The only and insignificant gripe can be considered a rather loud click when the percussion mechanism is triggered.

    SUMMARY: a household stapler in a plastic case. It is functionally equipped not worse than many professional models and is not inferior to them in impact force. Excellent ergonomics make the R453 highly recommended for the widest range of domestic applications.

    CONSUMER ANALYSIS

    CONSTRUCTION: This stapler works with a wide staple (1.2mm thick) just like the Stayer 31510, so tested with original Remocolor staples.

    Considering the model belongs to the household class, it has a number of attractive features. Firstly, it is a spring impact mechanism that reduces recoil. Secondly, the grip and actuation angles are well matched, besides the force transmitted to the lever is distributed over the entire surface of the handle, making it easier to work.

    With a few exceptions, the structural parts are made of metal, which provides the stapler with durability. But it will not be easy to repair it if necessary: ​​the case is maintenance-free - assembled on metal rivets.

    The model has no "bells and whistles". Of the useful devices - only a ring for fixing the lever in the lower position (so the stapler takes up less space).

    Adjusting the force of impact gives perceptible changes primarily in the force applied to the handle. As a remark to the designers, let's say: for the weakest "shot", the screw must be unscrewed, and there are no restrictions on its movement. That is, it can be removed completely, and if you carelessly, you can lose it.

    A protruding spout with a striker is convenient for work. Despite the relatively large distance to the perpendicular surface, in some cases it is possible to drive the staples almost closely.

    TEST RESULTS: On pine and larch (soft and hard wood) the stapler showed excellent results. Without even pressing on the striking part, you can drive the 14th staples quite tightly into solid wood. If there is a desire to drown the "fasteners" in the larch, you just need to press on the stapler with your other hand.

    But the work on chipboard did not work out even with 10 staples. Press on the stapler, do not press, and he bends many "consumables". Checking on staples of size 8 showed that this is the limit of the Force-NS capabilities when working on chipboard.

    Recoil during operation corresponds to a device with a spring mechanism - that is, small. At the same time, the adjusting screw allows you to vary the impact force in a fairly wide range.

    As a result, the skepticism generated by the somewhat cumbersome appearance of the stapler was completely dispelled during the tests.

    SUMMARY: A household model that uses wide staples and has significant impact force. When working on wood, it easily drives in "consumables" up to size 14 inclusive, on chipboard - up to size 8. Despite its large dimensions, the stapler is convenient and weighs quite little.

    CONSUMER ANALYSIS

    CONSTRUCTION: both externally and functionally, this stapler is very close to the Novus J-19 EADHG model (it is in our review), differing from it only in the mechanism for fixing the handle in the lower position (to activate it, you need to pull the lever).

    Just like the Novus J-19, the Stanley HD14 has a plastic sibling (Vario 14) for home use. However, a complaint can be made against the "professional": the handle is more than half made of plastic (the metal rod of the lever inside does not even reach the middle), the latch of the staple feed mechanism also causes concern, since it works for bending.

    The functionality of the device is worthy of praise. Among the useful little things - a clip for wearing a stapler on the belt. Now, for example, while standing on a ladder, it is much easier to straighten the material before fixing with two hands.

    A narrow nose protruding 5 mm above the supporting surface helps to "crawl" into some hard-to-reach places. And on the striker, you can see a slight thickening from one edge - this part of it hits the nails, which, when loaded, are pressed against the edge of the chute.

    TEST RESULTS: Stapling was surprising at first. For example, the pressure on the lever is distributed so that in the lower position it is enough to redirect the force slightly to fix the handle. This is what happened at first (despite the desire to continue working). Having got used to it and slightly changing the grip angle, you forget about this feature quite quickly, but when you change the staplers (which we did for comparison), you "come across" again.

    The locking ratchet of the distant stop is somewhat "loose": it certainly does not slip backward, but the slightest push forward is enough for the installation to go astray, and the distance becomes smaller. You have to change the settings with two hands.

    Otherwise, it is convenient to work with a stapler. The impact force was quite enough to complete all the tasks, and only on the last two it was necessary to press the striking part to the surface in order to ensure a tight entry of the bracket. When recessed "fasteners" of the 14th size in the chipboard, the function of a reusable "shot" helped out.

    Adjusting the impact force on soft wood does not give noticeable results, but on hard wood it helps to avoid gaps and drive the bracket tightly. When working on pine (even in the case of 14-mm "consumables"), you can safely switch to a weak "shot" - this reduces the force applied to the handle and has almost no effect on the depth of entry of the "fasteners".

    CONSTRUCTION: in terms of size and impact force, this model is comparable to the professional staplers that took part in the test. However, the 31510 is positioned as a household device, which allows it to feel very at ease among its "neighbors" - amateur devices.

    The versatility of the stapler is that it can drive not only staples and nails, but also fasten the cable. The striker has a round depression in the middle, which, by the way, plays a positive role when hammering rectangular staples, because the strike with such a striker falls just on the edges of the staple. When working with nails, they can be supported both on the right surface of the guide chute and on the left - the firing pin is symmetrical.

    The staples for this model need wide ones (1.2 mm thick). Cons - less prevalence compared to narrow ones, pros - more convenience when performing certain tasks (for example, when attaching polyethylene to the greenhouse frame).

    The spring mechanism, through which the stapler works, has greater recoil compared to the spring one, so the presence of a rubber shock-absorbing insert on the body is very handy.

    TEST RESULTS: on simpler tasks, the striking part had to be pressed more often than on other amateur class staplers. But with the last - the most difficult - task Stayer coped well. It was then that the original design of the striker made itself felt: the fact that the blow falls on the edges of the bracket, firstly, does not allow it to bend sideways, and secondly, it ensures contact of the "crossbar" with the surface even when working with 14 "consumables "on chipboard. In this case, the edges of the "fastener" enter the material a little deeper than the center, the bracket bends slightly in an arc and adjoins quite tightly, although it does not sink into the chipboard. Of course, on the most difficult tasks, I had to press on the striking part of the stapler - it is impossible to work with one hand.

    The adjusting screw turns quite easily, but it does not give a tangible difference in the power of the "shot": neither the immersion depth of the staples, nor the force applied to the handle, change almost. Strong recoil during operation is not felt, but still it is more than that of models with a spring mechanism.

    The staple unit must be disassembled only in a discharged state, otherwise, under the action of the corresponding spring, the strip of "consumables" will fly out of the stapler. This is not dangerous, but somewhat unexpected.

    In a nutshell, the impression of the Stayer 31510 can be conveyed as follows: a little bulky, but powerful and reliable tool.
