Approaching the usual wall painting with a certain imagination, using unconventional painting techniques and tools, you can transform the interior of the room.
A feature of various techniques is that, by varying the various color solutions of decorative coatings, it is possible to smooth out or, conversely, it is beneficial to emphasize minor surface defects. Moreover, if defects appear on the coating during operation, the problem is solved with minimal financial and time costs by fragmentary cosmetic repairs. From this, however, in no case follows that careful preparation of the base can be neglected for the application of decorative coatings. On the contrary, for a guaranteed and high-quality "work" of the coating, it is necessary to determine at the stage of paint selection what qualities (strength, weather resistance, etc.) it should have.
Removal technique with a leather twist roller
To obtain the desired decorative effect, you can use the following tools and accessories: plastic and metal spatulas of various sizes and calibers, synthetic or natural sea sponges, tampons of different sizes, tampon roller, brush, glove, drip airbrush, wood effect tool, and others.
All information on the required technique is provided by the material supplier. The required tools are usually also purchased from the supplier.
The effects that can be obtained using this or that technique are truly endless. This is the possibility of creating textures that imitate natural stone, old parchment, leather or damp silk, woven mat or "crumpled fabric", and reproduction of patterns that resemble the structure of wood in appearance and to the touch, creating the effect of intense metallic sheen, delicate haze or northern lights, cloudy skies or surreal paintings, etc. The reproduced pattern can be more or less embossed, textured, smooth - from matte to polished.
Let's consider very briefly only the most common techniques for creating various decorative coatings. Moreover, manufacturers of paints and varnishes are constantly developing more and more new techniques, suggest the use of new devices. The same materials, applied in different ways, have different effects. Note that similar techniques from different manufacturers are called differently. Today there is no single established terminology.
Blur method. A wide variety of patterns is provided by the wash method, when the second, fresh layer of paint is "washed off" after application with a brush, sponge, cloth or polyethylene. Moreover, depending on the selected tool, completely different patterns are obtained. With a piece of fabric, you can create a pattern that resembles small ripples in water, with a spatula or a large brush - a pattern in the form of wide strokes, you can even achieve the effect of denim. The wash method, which gives walls and ceilings an airy look, works even on substrates such as fiberglass wallpaper.
Swab (or sponge) application technique. Diluted or not diluted with water (depending on the desired effect), the composition is applied with a brush or roller evenly to the surface at a time. Then the surface is processed with a swab (or sponge) with rotational movements. After drying, it is possible to apply a second (or more) color in order to obtain the effect of multicolor and depth of the picture.
Embossed putty technique
Application technique with a painting glove. Several stains of different colors are randomly applied to the wall. Undiluted paint is used for this operation. Using a glove, the stains are smeared over the surface to produce an uneven color with darker and lighter tints. It is also possible to apply a separate layer with a roller and then use a glove to create an elegant pattern. Depending on the chosen colors, applied at the beginning of the spots, you can get a play of more or less contrasting colors.
Colored knurling technique - creates the effect of a crumpled surface structure. The glossy finishing layer is rolled over the matte dried base with a patchwork or shaped foam roller. In some coatings, the layer is applied with a roller and then with a roller and "structured".
Stencil printing. The stencil is applied to the painted wall and the drawing is applied. You can create a variety of patterns and borders.
Application technique with streaks. A paint composition is applied with a brush in vertical stripes on a small working surface. Stripes of different colors alternate. Then uniformity of colors is given with a spatula. Possible spatula application "wet on wet", which allows you to achieve a softer, blurred pattern, or "wet on dry", allowing you to emphasize the geometric, modernity of the pattern.
Spray application technique for a drip effect. By using nozzles of different diameters and adjusting the air pressure, you can change the effect of droplet atomization in order to obtain the desired result. Once paint of one color has been applied and dried, you can immediately spray another color for a special polychromic effect.
Brush mark effect. A thick layer of undiluted paint is applied to the surface with a roller or brush. Then, with a brush of the selected size, lightly sweep the surface over the surface to get brush marks on it. Once dry, a coat of a different color can be applied, repeating this procedure to obtain a multi-color effect.
Technique for creating a wood surface effect. The composition, diluted by 5-10%, is applied with a roller or brush to obtain a uniform surface. The "wood" effect is achieved by using a special device on a freshly applied layer of paint. Movements from top to bottom with simultaneous turns of the hand give the effect of wood veins and knots with stains.
