Often in colloquial speech and technical literature, the terms "roof" and "roof" are used interchangeably. The concept of "roof" is more general - it includes the roof as one of the structural elements. In accordance with applicable regulations:

The roof is the upper enclosing structure of the building, which performs load-bearing, waterproofing and, with non-attic (combined) roofs and warm attics, heat-insulating functions.
Roofing is the top element of the roof (covering) that protects buildings from all types of atmospheric influences.
Modern roofs are, first of all, new materials and technical solutions that improve indicators such as reliability, durability and aesthetic appearance. The choice of materials for the roofing system should be based on the principle of coordinating the service life of all components. The main economic indicator when choosing a roofing material is not the cost per unit area of a particular roof covering, but the cost of the entire roofing system for a given service life and performance characteristics. The reliability and durability of the roof is also ensured by the correct execution of work on the installation (arrangement) of the entire roofing system.
Varieties of roof shapes

The gable roof is the most common classic design. There are roof options with hanging rafters or sloped rafters. The numerous options of this type include roofs with a uniform or uneven slope of the slope or the size of the eaves.

Shed roof. The roof slope is usually facing upwind and provides protection from wind, rain and snow. The main area of application of this type of roof is auxiliary buildings, structures of simple construction, production or warehouse buildings.

Hip roof. Symmetry is the defining element: clean and unambiguous shapes and lines that come together at the top.

Hip roof. Emphasizes the protective function of the roof and gives the building a representative appearance. The characteristic features of the hip roof are accentuated by the presence of dormer windows. A type of hip roof is half-hip.

The mansard roof is the result of the desire to transform the attic space into a full-fledged living floor. This type of roof structure is very popular in modern construction, because efficient use of the living area of the attic floor is ensured.
The listed roof shapes are subject to modification due to the use of various elements, both in the device of the coating itself and in the roof structure. Additional elements are used for external roof decoration and enhance the functionality of living spaces by providing lighting and ventilation.

One of these elements is the roof-mounted skylight, which is an economical solution to the use of attic space.

Certain types of dormer windows are characterized by increased design complexity. The quadrangular dormer is one of the most traditional elements, the vertical side walls of which are usually covered with small-format roofing materials.

Dormer windows with a gable roof represent an interesting architectural design for the roof design.

One type of skylight is the round roof skylight.
